My boyfriend loves chocolate and he would choose a good chocolate cake over any other dessert, at any given time. So I brought him to Black Magic, which is a patisserie that only sells chocolate cakes. The cakes that they sell aren’t the dainty kind, but it’s a massive rectangular slice of chocolate cake.
I had quite a high expectation for this place because it had one of the highest ratings on a food review site. We went in and ordered a slice of dark chocolate cake. The cake arrived and we started to doubt our decision to visit this place. It is usually not a good sign when the shop presents you with a large slice of cake.
The first bite proved to be promising. Rich, dark chocolate ganache sandwiched between two layers of chocolate sponge. But as we dissected the cake further, we realised that the cake was probably one of those generic sheet cakes that are used in all of their other cakes. The sponge did not have a distinct taste of chocolate, or anything. The flavour of dark chocolate came solely from the ganache. I guess this could be a way for the business to save money but I would have preferred if they put more effort into their cakes to give them a richer texture and mouthfeel.
Overall not a bad place for a slice of chocolate cake, but I will not go back.
